Extinct crocodile-like reptile from the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene.
Champsosaurus is an extinct reptile that looked like a crocodile, belonging to a group called choristoderes. It lived during the Late Cretaceous and early Paleogene periods in North America and Europe. Its body shape is similar to that of modern gharials, with a long, narrow snout. It lived in freshwater environments and probably ate fish, much like gharials do today.
Champsosaurus was the first choristodere ever described. Edward Drinker Cope named it in 1876, based on isolated vertebrae found in the Judith River Formation in Montana. Cope chose *C. annectens* as the type species, even though *C. profundus* was named first, because he had more vertebrae for *C. annectens*. That species was based on nine isolated vertebral centra, two of which are now lost. These vertebrae are not considered diagnostic enough to identify a species, so *C. annectens* is now regarded as a nomen vanum or nomen dubium. Cope named several other species between 1876 and 1882, also from isolated vertebrae. In 1905, Barnum Brown described the first complete *Champsosaurus* remains. He noted that one of Cope's species, *C. vaccinsulensis*, was actually from an indeterminate plesiosaur. He also showed that the vertebrae Cope used were heavily eroded and varied too much along the spine to be useful for identifying species, including those of *C. annectens*. William Parks agreed with this conclusion in 1933.
In 1905, Brown named two species: *C. ambulator*, from a fragmentary skeleton and partial skull found in the Hell Creek Formation, and *C. laramiensis*, from a nearly complete skeleton and skull also from the Hell Creek Formation. In 1927, Parks named *C. albertensis* from a partial skeleton without a skull found in Alberta. In 1933, he named *C. natator* from an incomplete skeleton with a fragmentary skull found in the Belly River Group. In 1979, Denise Sigogneau-Russell named *C. dolloi* from Paleocene remains in Belgium. In 1972, Bruce Erickson named *C. gigas* from a partial skeleton and skull found in North Dakota. In 1981, he named *C. tenuis* from another partial skeleton and skull in North Dakota. In 1998, K. Q. Gao and Richard Carr Fox described *C. lindoei* from a nearly complete skeleton and skull from the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta. Their publication thoroughly reviewed *Champsosaurus* and rediagnosed most species except *C. ambulator* and *C. laramiensis*.
Fossils have been found in North America (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming) and Europe (Belgium, France), from the Upper Cretaceous to the late Paleocene. Some remains tentatively assigned to *Champsosaurus* come from the high Canadian Arctic, dating to a very warm period in the Coniacian–Turonian.
Sixteen species have been named, but only seven are currently considered valid. The type species *C. annectens* is considered dubious. The only named European species, *C. dolloi*, was considered too fragmentary to justify a new species by Gao and Fox in 1998.
Most species grew to about 1.5 meters long, but *C. gigas*, the largest, reached 3 to 3.5 meters. The skull is flattened from top to bottom, and the temporal arches are expanded backward and sideways, giving the skull a heart-shaped look from above. The snout is very long and gharial-like, making up about half the skull length and at least four times as long as it is wide, with the nostrils at the tip. The ear openings are on the underside of the skull. The body is flat and streamlined, with heavy gastralia (belly ribs). Compared to other choristoderes, *Champsosaurus* has a reduced lacrimal bone, the postorbital bone does not form part of the eye socket, there is no contact between the premaxilla and vomer bones, an internarial bone is present, the choanae are positioned toward the back due to the elongated vomer, the interpterygoid vacuity is small and fully enclosed by the pterygoid bones near the back of the suborbital fenestra, the suborbital fenestra is short and kidney-shaped, the pterygoid and parasphenoid are fused, the jaw joint is in front of the occipital condyles, a neomorphic bone forms most of the border of the posttemporal fenestra, the paroccipital process is strongly angled downward, the basal tubera of the basisphenoid are wing-like and expanded backward and downward, and the mandibular symphysis is elongated.
