Ceratosaurus

A horned theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period.

Ceratosaurus, meaning "horn lizard" from Greek, was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur of the Late Jurassic, around 155 million years ago, found in North America and Europe. American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh first described the genus in 1884 based on a nearly complete skeleton from Garden Park, Colorado, within the Morrison Formation. This specimen, the type species *Ceratosaurus nasicornis*, remains the most complete known for the genus. Two additional species, *C. dentisulcatus* and *C. magnicornis*, were proposed in 2000 from fragmentary Utah and Colorado skeletons, but most paleontologists now reject these, considering all three specimens may represent different growth stages of a single species. A juvenile specimen was first reported in 1999, and a partial skeleton from Portugal’s Lourinhã Formation in 2000 confirmed the genus outside North America. Fragmentary remains from Tanzania, Uruguay, and Switzerland are not widely accepted as *Ceratosaurus*.

This medium-sized theropod had deep jaws with very long, blade-like teeth. Its most distinctive features were a prominent ridge-like horn on the snout midline and a pair of smaller horns above the eyes. The forelimbs were very short but functional, with four-fingered hands bearing claws on the first three digits. The tail was deep from top to bottom, and a row of small osteoderms ran down the middle of the neck, back, and tail, with additional skin bones elsewhere on the body. *Ceratosaurus* gives its name to Ceratosauria, an early-diverging theropod clade separate from the lineage leading to modern birds. Some paleontologists consider it closely related to *Genyodectes* from Argentina, which shares its elongated teeth. The older *Proceratosaurus* from England was once thought ancestral but is now recognized as an early tyrannosauroid. *Ceratosaurus* shared its habitat with large theropods like *Torvosaurus* and *Allosaurus*, likely occupying different ecological niches to reduce competition. It probably preyed on plant-eating dinosaurs; earlier suggestions of fish-eating have been rejected by recent studies. The nasal horn was likely used for display rather than as a weapon, contrary to Marsh’s original idea.

The Ceratosaurus, however, belongs to a small exception: it is one of only two prehistoric species in the entire production that was not modelled on a Burian painting, the other being the Stegosaurus it confronts in the twilight fight. The reasons behind this choice remain unexplained in the available record, leaving the Ceratosaurus as something of a production mystery. What is known is that Zeman's workshop relied on a versatile toolkit—two-dimensional profile images filmed in real time, three-dimensional miniature models, and larger sculpted heads and bodies—to bring creatures to life without the labour-intensive frame-by-frame stop-motion that dominated the medium. Zeman instead structured the film around the geological time epochs as defined by palaeontologists, populating each period with the species typical of that era according to the scientific knowledge available in the 1950s. The Ceratosaurus thus functions as an educational anchor, a representative of its time and place, and the film's overall design anticipated by decades the naturalistic, documentary-style philosophy that would later define television series such as the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts.

Survival Across Borders and Media

The Ceratosaurus's twilight duel has endured through multiple iterations of the film's distribution. The original 93-minute Czechoslovak release earned recognition at the International Film Festivals of both Venice and Mannheim, establishing the scene as part of an award-winning body of work. Cayton replaced the original opening and closing with new footage of American boys at the New York American Museum of Natural History, copied the material onto lower-quality film stock, and chopped it into roughly six-minute segments for syndication to children's television programs.
